Baby Got Backtalk

Baby Got Back Talk have released their Wiretap Records debut single, “Model Minority,” to all streaming platforms. The track comes from the band’s forthcoming EP, Existential Shred, out September 9th. Vocalist/bassist G’Ra Asim says the tune is “a wry sendup of a classic hater’s lament, namely that marginalization is currency nowadays and social outgroups are fashionable. It’s a gripe that tends to reach your ears when you’re in a rock band that foregrounds queer punx and punx of color. We took that idea and ran with it: why not have a rallying cry [akin to Keri Hilson’s “Pretty Girl Rock”] repping all us twinkling tokens?”

Tuned Up writes: “The video is an homage to “I’m Not Okay (I Promise)” by My Chemical Romance, borrowing its juxtaposition of inspiring title cards between scenes of private school life. It’s not out of the question that “Model Minority” could become an anthem of similar importance for queer folks and POC in the punk scene today.”

Mrs. Ghost

Mrs. Ghost have released their new album, Entertainment for the End Times to all streaming platforms.

Entertainment For The End Times is the debut album by Austin, TX and Missoula, MT-based power pop band Mrs. Ghost. The 11 track album, with moments ranging from Bob Dylan-esque acoustic singer-songwriter moments to fast-paced tracks like Jimmy Eat World’s early 2000s output, is the culmination of band members Jacob Godbey’s and Sean Larichiuta’s contrasting personal tastes coming together in an extremely complimentary way. It is an album with elements that are enjoyable for fans of stripped-down sets, aggressive rock, and everyone in between. Formed in 2019 in Austin, TX, Mrs. Ghost emulates all of the great dual-vocalist bands including Blink-182, Less Than Jake, and The Menzingers. Also heavily influenced by Alkaline Trio, Mrs. Ghost brings a unique blend of singer-songwriter style acoustic grooves and pop punk riffs to the table, while touching many bases in between. Mrs. Ghost is Sean Larichiuta on guitar and vocals & Jacob Godbey on drums, bass, vocals, and guitar, with both writing and programming. Larichiuta, based in Austin, and Godbey, based in Missoula, actively write and record primarily remotely. With a history of hosting livestreams before it was 2020-cool, Mrs. Ghost has long been at home in a technologically, if not physically, connected world.

You can purchase the digital album, a CD, stickers, and t-shirts at the band’s website.

And make sure to stream the album while you’re at it!

The Futile

Dane Johns has released his new novel, The Futile, which one reader described as “Hunger Games on the Warped Tour.” The pitch is simple:

In a near future world, where critics of the authoritarian leader are imprisoned and media has become a state sponsored tool for repression, one young punk rock band goes on the road to start a revolution with their music. Written with plenty of humor and heart, The Futile is ultimately a book about how people have the power to change themselves—and the world—even in the darkest of times.

The author is a long time punk and and emo music and the book is filled with various references to bands like Colour Revolt, Foxing, Now, Now, mewithoutYou, Pussy Riot, The Copyrights, and many more. You can order the book here, and make sure you check out the author’s website to get a free zine and various buttons/stickers made for the release.

With the Punches

With the Punches have released their new song “Stoneham Blues” and will be releasing their new EP, Discontent, on May 27 via Mutant League Records. The song is now available on all streaming services and a video was recently released.

Of the new track, vocalist Jesse Vadala says:

In the time when we were touring independently and writing our own way around the country, I often felt invincible even if just for a while. Inevitably, the rubber band would snap and bad news would arrive. I would be reminded swiftly of the severity of time and certainty of death. Always mildly obsessed with thoughts of my own. This song is loosely written about a few close friends who passed away. I struggled like many do in processing death, especially those lost to addiction. We always wish for ways to protect the ones we love. When they leave abruptly, it can shatter so many lives. Some days we feel lost. Other days we shine a bit brighter from the light of our memories. There were several sharp moments like this in the last few years. Now when I give it time, I feel so proud and thankful for all of the beautiful memories, they tend to outweigh the bad.

With The Punches is regarded as a staple within the emo/pop punk community. Formed in 2008, the band has released three EP’s and one full-length album in that time. Their new EP Discontent will be the band’s first release in over nine years. Recorded and produced by Brendan Williams at Gain Stage Studios, the upcoming EP includes 5 of their most distinguished tracks to date.

You can pre-save the EP here, and pre-orders are up.
