Apple has announced a new feature adding transcripts to podcasts:
Apple automatically generates transcripts after a new episode is published. Your episode will be available for listening right away, and the transcript will be available shortly afterwards. There will be a short delay while we process your transcript. If portions of your episode change with dynamically inserted audio, Apple Podcasts will not display the segments of the audio that have changed since the original transcription. Music lyrics are also not displayed in the transcripts.
Apple Podcasts Adds Shows from Apple Music
Apple Podcasts significantly expanded its Apple Music and Apple News podcast channels late yesterday and introduced podcasts for subscribers to a variety of third-party apps. In all, Apple says there are over 60 new shows comprised of over 2,500 episodes.
This means shows like Zane Lowe and Mark Hoppus’s After School Radio can now be found in the podcast app.
Apple Announces Podcast Updates
Apple has announced some new podcast updates. Jason Snell, over at Six Colors, has a good rundown:
The other big news out of today’s session is for podcasters (and presumably for podcast advertisers): Apple is opening up in-episode analytics of podcasts. For the most part, podcasters only really know when an episode’s MP3 file is downloaded. Beyond that, we can’t really tell if anyone listens to an episode, or how long they listen—only the apps know for sure.
Apple said today that it will be using (anonymized) data from the app to show podcasters how many people are listening and where in the app people are stopping or skipping. This has the potential to dramatically change our perception of how many people really listen to a show, and how many people skip ads, as well as how long a podcast can run before people just give up.
iTunes Podcasts is Now Apple Podcasts
Apple has rebranded their iTunes podcast directory as “Apple Podcasts.” You can still find Encore in the same ‘ol place.
I do wonder how much longer iTunes will remain. Splitting that (very bloated) app up has to on some roadmap somewhere.
