If I recall correctly, this “Throwback Thursday” gallery comes from the first time I ever photographed The Starting Line at the Roseland Ballroom in Portland, OR. I am pretty sure it was also their first national tour, and they were the opening band on a bill with New Found Glory, RX Bandits, and H2O.
It’s been interesting as I continue my deep dive into what seems like a never ending abyss of images; I sort through these boxes and struggle with where to even start. This week, when I came across these rolls of film, I realized these images would end up being a pretty sizable milestone for myself as a photographer. A few of the images from this night ended up being used on the album cover for The Starting Line’s release of The Early Years (We the People Sessions). You’ll find the full gallery below.
I missed this at the end of April, but Paper Tiger, from Doomtree, has released his new project: In Other Words via Bandcamp.
Today is the first release of my new project, In Other Words, which will consist of four separate EP releases this year. Each release will have its own feel based on a set series of albums that have had a super influential effect on me. To make the music I recorded some friends of mine (Dessa, Aby Wolf, Jessie Daley) singing some vocal lines that I then manipulated and recorded my friend Nate Kinsella playing some drum tracks. Oh man you guys, it makes me so happy to be putting out new solo stuff. It’s been a minute. OK, talk to you soon.
Deathwish Records is releasing a Saetia compilation on vinyl.
Their style of melodic, abrasive, and emotive punk / hardcore still captures new audiences today. In their short time, Saetia released a demo cassette, two 7”s, and one LP with pressings of very small numbers. Obtaining these come with near impossible searches and deep pockets. This collection will finally make available the entire discography for vinyl lovers.

Trent Reznor, speaking with Billboard, blasted YouTube for their stance on copyrighted material:
“Personally, I find YouTube’s business to be very disingenuous,” said Reznor. “It is built on the backs of free, stolen content and that’s how they got that big. I think any free-tiered service is not fair. It’s making their numbers and getting them a big IPO and it is built on the back of my work and that of my peers. That’s how I feel about it. Strongly. We’re trying to build a platform that provides an alternative — where you can get paid and an artist can control where their [content] goes.”
YouTube has responded:
The overwhelming majority of labels and publishers have licensing agreements in place with YouTube to leave fan videos up on the platform and earn revenue from them. Today the revenue from fan uploaded content accounts for roughly 50 percent of the music industry’s YouTube revenue. Any assertion that this content is largely unlicensed is false. To date, we have paid out over $3 billion to the music industry–and that number is growing year on year.
I get what YouTube is saying, but I can go there right now and type in virtually any song and find dozens of “copyright not intended” videos uploaded.
If you missed Apple’s WWDC Keynote yesterday, MacStories has a fantastic overview of all the new stuff coming to iOS 10.
One notable omission is the apparent end of another short-lived attempt at a music-themed social network from Apple. Yes, the Connect tab is nowhere to be seen in iOS 10’s Music app, and unless they plan to add it back in a later beta, the service that was such a big portion of Apple’s music announcements last year may have already been deemed a failure. I don’t think anyone is going to miss it.
Beyond the new design, the Music app is also now gaining native support for lyrics, a great addition if it can compile a database as big as the likes of Musixmatch. The new lyrics feature is also being added to the updated iTunes in macOS Sierra.

Julianne Tveten, writing for Motherboard:
Much of the online marketing world, however, seeks to change this. Growing numbers of websites, from magazines to clothing stores, have adopted “exit-intent pop-ups,” rectangular modals that blanket a webpage, prompting a user to join a mailing list. Beyond their visual intrusiveness, these ads prey on the uncertain user, foregoing the neutral simplicity of a “yes/no” option in favor of charged, shame-inducing language.
If your website does this you’re an asshole.
Xtra Mile Recordings has confirmed they’ve re-signed Against Me! and will be releasing the band’s new album later this year.
