Review: Fall Out Boy – Young and Menace

Fall Out Boy - Mania

This first impression was originally posted as a live blog for supporters in our forums on April 21st, 2017. First impressions are meant to be quick, fun, initial impressions on an album or release as I listen to it for the first time. It’s a running commentary written while listening to an album — not a review. More like a diary of thoughts. This post has been lightly edited for structure and flow.

I’ve done zero “single song” first listen threads, but if I was going to do one … I feel like Fall Out Boy are the band I should do it for. They’re about as big a band as we have from the music scene and they’ve got a pretty good following here still, so it just makes sense. Gotta give the people what they want!

I watched some basketball, and then got some work finished, so I’ve got a few minutes before I call it a night and go watch some Spider-Man cartoons and have a beer in bed. Not a bad Friday night.

Ok. So, few thoughts:

  1. I’ve played the song about 6-8 times already, I’m gonna play it a couple right now and write up some thoughts on it. Once the first time through, then pause and write a little, and then some closing thoughts. So it won’t be a super long thread, but it should be fun.
  2. As always I reserve the right to change my mind later, this isn’t a review, it’s just me kinda talking aloud as I listen to music and think about things and share thoughts and how it sounds.

Fall Out Boy Tease and Leave Us Hanging

Fall Out Boy sent out a cryptic tweet and Instagram post this morning that alluded to something happening today at 11am CST at a list of addresses. The time has come, and passed, and so far … nothing.

What I’ve heard is that a new music video is done, so maybe that’s what’s planned? Beside that, I’m in the dark like everyone else right now.

Update: During the previews at a few movie theaters a clip is running (you can see it at the seven minute mark) that highlights next Friday’s date.

‘Infinity on High’ Turns Ten

Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy posted a little blog to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of Infinity on High.

this one was strange. it was transitional. If FUCT was the caterpillar album- Infinity On High was the cocoon one. we had been on tour around the world nonstop but hadn’t really seen any of the magazine covers we were on or had any perspective of seeing our videos on TRL- it was odd how everything was changing but it felt like we were in a time capsule… this record would bring so many ideas from jay z doing the intro to working with baby face on “thnks fr th mmrs” to the flight 101 saga (3 shows in a day in ny, chicago, and la)… but first and foremost it documented this blur that had become our lives. this record more than any of the others has always reminded me of night time- both the anxiety of insomnia and the peace of being awake when everyone else is asleep. i remember before we released it i used like a security blanket listening and trying to fall asleep. i really appreciate everyone who gave this one a chance.

“Be clearly aware of the stars and infinity on high. Then life seems almost enchanted after all.” vincent van gogh

I’ll always remember this album for getting to sneakily release the first song, “The Carpal Tunnel of Love,” and seeing AP.net screenshots up on MTV. (And ten years later I feel pretty vindicated in my praise for the album after getting called all kinds of names originally.)

“Thnks fr th Mmrs” remains one of my favorite Fall Out Boy songs and I’m feeling in the mood to go give it another spin.

Teespring Teams Up with Bands to Create Limited Edition NFL Shirts

Teespring teamed up with a bunch of bands and artists to create limited edition t-shirts for their favorite NFL teams. Fall Out Boy, Underoath, All Time Low, and more are all featured. The full list of bands can be found below. There’s no way in hell I’m buying a OneRepublic shirt though.

For the first time ever, a select group of artists have joined forces with the NFL, each representing their favorite team and city through unique, official NFL gear. These limited edition shirts are perfect for NFL fans to show their pride in their city’s football and music. These will be available for a short time only and after that, they’ll never be sold again.

Fall Out Boy Release “Bloom” Short Film Collaboration

Fall Out Boy have teamed up with Bobby Hundreds and We Are Famous to release the short film collaboration Bloom.

Most of us can relate to that that quiet moment right before a personal earthquake hits – where the world shatters at your very core and reality slowly cracks up to the surface like the protruding veins in your wrist. BLOOM explores the truth behind rising above failure and harnessing new life from it. The film stars the ever-amazing Scout Taylor-Compton (The Runaways, Halloween 2, Nashville) as a troubled young motorcyclist whose journey along a winding desert road is violently halted at a crossroads. Through sheer force of will she must choose a new, more positive life path, in order to rise from the ashes.
