Tonight I’m all the way back in 2003 with Further Seems Forever’s ‘How to Start a Fire.’ To this day I still love this album cover, and having the larger artwork was something that drew me to collecting my favorite records in the first place. A physical manifestation of my musical history and journey. I still think Jason’s vocals on this one are on a different level, pure emotion and passion.

“And if I only had an ocean
To complement the sky
I’d pull it down, paint it for you
And I’d never question why…”

Avril Lavigne on Mark Hoppus’s Podcast

Avril Lavigne

Avril Lavigne is on the latest episode of After School Radio.

I was really excited to work with you. To be honest, you’re one of my favourite artists. ‘Dude Ranch’ and ‘Enema Of The State’, those were the records I was listening to in high school and as a teenager and I feel like they were really impactful on me as I was coming into my own musical identity.

”So when I had the opportunity to work with you, which was over Zoom, which was different. I was so excited and I was really impressed with how efficient you are in the studio. You write, you record yourself, you can engineer, you sing, you’re playing. So having you on the album is a huge honour for me. So I’m really excited about our collaboration.

Tonight’s spin is @yellowcard ‘Paper Walls.’ For a while I was keeping a running list of pop-punk albums that I thought held the championship belt. The ones that had moved the genre forward and helped define where the sound was going next. This album definitely held it for a while and I still go between this and ‘Southern Air’ as my favorite YC album (not counting the huge nostalgia boost OA gets). Full of massive hits and that first five song run is immaculate. There’s something about this band that whenever I’m in a bad mood or just can’t think of what I want to listen to … I can throw on just about any of their albums and immediately be singing along.

“Go put on your best tonight
It’s you and me and one spotlight
One more show, one last time
We are ready….”

Weatherstate – “Headstone” (Video Premiere)

Weatherstate

Today I’m beyond thrilled to share the latest music video for a UK-based punk band called Weatherstate for their song “Headstone.” The song comes from their upcoming Rude Records set called Never Better, out everywhere on February 11th. The band shared this about the new single:

Probably the second softest song on the record, and not being as morbid as the name might suggest, ‘Headstone’ is about trying to make something out of ourselves in the time we have here. It’s okay to go through periods of life unhappy and that’s what makes the good bits all the better. ‘Catch me I don’t want to come down’ specifically relates to friends being around when you need a safety net, and how important it is to have the support network that can get you through those monotonous times. We’re only around here for so long, and that’s the way it is, we shouldn’t beat ourselves up too much, and it’s completely okay to sometimes just roll with the punches.

I also had a chance to catch up with lead vocalist, Harry Hoskins, before the release of Never Better. If you’re enjoying the singles that have hit the streets thus far, consider pre-ordering the record here.
