Friday Thoughts (July 20th, 2018)

Funny Animals

This post is made weekly in the supporter only Q&A thread on our forums. I share thoughts about new music out and various other things going on in my life.

Oh Friday, I am so excited you are finally here. Here’s some thoughts on things from over the past week:

  • Quite a few updates to the website this week: New notices system, cleaned up avatar uploads, emoji categories come to quick reply, and I made it an option to hide the supporter badge (this was requested by a few people).
  • I wrote up some early thoughts on the new Thrice album. I plan to do some more editing of that over the next few days and maybe add a little more before posting it on the main website.
  • Not a whole lot out this week, but I plan to check out that Wild Pink and Lori McKenna albums throughout the day for sure.
  • I enjoy these new renditions of Fickle Friends songs. The MUNA remix is quite good.
  • I really like the new Alkaline Trio song, it led me to do a big re-listen of their discography over the past week. Can’t wait for that album. It also got me thinking about how many “eras” of Epitaph Records there have been that I’ve loved. It started with the skate-punk era, then it moved into the pop-punk era, and now they’re releasing new bands I really like and albums from some of my favorites like Alk3 and Thrice. Great label with real longevity.
  • The new The 1975 single is such a joy. I feel lucky to be alive while this band is in their prime, there’s just something exciting about them. It’s invigorating to see them do what they do and how they create music and capture the imaginations of all their fans. Being so good at what they do, and creative at the same time, is such a blessing to watch. They fascinate me.
  • I also really dig that new LANY song “Thru These Tears” — that band has such a California vibe, but right now, in the the summer, it’s kinda perfect. It’s been hot as hell and this is the kinda music I’m into during the hot summer days leading into the, almost as hot, summer nights.
  • Hopesfall, Pennywise, and Greyhaven all got quite a few spins this week at the gym.
  • Hannah and I watched the first two episodes of Sharp Objects on HBO. We’re in on that show. We have also realized we like new shows. We have multiple seasons of Orphan Black and Humans we should probably watch, but instead we started something new. It’s weird how by season three of a show it sometimes doesn’t grab you as much and you don’t have the same burning fire to watch it. That hasn’t been the case for me with season three of Billions however (which I’ve been watching when Hannah has to work or play a concert late), it’s just very much in my wheelhouse and I look forward to it every time I get to sit down for an episode.
  • I’m very happy baseball is back tonight. That’s been such a calming and nice presence in my life each night. That, plus really spending some time trying to meditate and focus on daily stoic lessons has been a big boost to my mental health over the past few weeks. (Trying not to get caught into the daily deluge of news has helped too.)
  • We watched Disobedience a few nights ago. Pretty good movie. It was a tad slow, but the performances and direction were interesting. Rachel McAdams and Rachel Weisz were fantastic.
  • We kinda hated Anchorman 2. It was … way too long. The jokes didn’t work very well the second time, and the only thing I found interesting was how the news commentary felt very prescient for happening before the 2016 election. We were bored by the time we got to the second half of the movie.
  • We had the opposite reaction to Super Troopers 2, which, don’t get me wrong, is not a good movie and is just as stupid … however, we laughed quite a bit during it. The first was one of those movies that we just had on all the time in college. One of the few DVDs we owned and therefore would just put on repeat most nights. So, I know that by heart and I think that helped with the second one when they made the callbacks. It’s also got some pretty stupid bits in it, but, I was surprised I didn’t hate it. Humor’s weird.
  • Down 9.4lbs since we started tracking calories/portions. Lowest I’ve weighed all year.
  • Hannah and my six year anniversary was on Tuesday. Time goes by very fast.
