Bad Books will be releasing an expanded version of their self-titled debut album this Friday. Orders for the special edition vinyl will be up soon.
Bad Books today announced a 10th anniversary expanded reissue of their debut self-titled album, which will be released this Friday, October 23rd. The album introduced the initial collaboration of friends Andy Hull (Manchester Orchestra) and Kevin Devine, along with Manchester Orchestra’s Robert McDowell (now an additional principal member). The reissue will include seven bonus, alternate versions of album tracks: four recorded for an APK session, including a fan favorite cover of Built To Spill’s “The Plan”; one recorded for Daytrotter; and two acoustic songs, originally released as a tour-exclusive 7” and available digitally here for the first time. To celebrate the announcement, Bad Books shared a recently unearthed live video of “The Plan,” which can now be seen HERE. The release will be available digitally and on a special edition, 2-disc vinyl, and is now available for pre-order.
Additionally, Hull and Devine have launched the ‘Bad Book Club’ podcast, where they interview friends and collaborators. Episodes will be made available in full exclusively to their Patreon subscribers, but the first episode will be available to all fans this Thursday and features a deep dive on the album.
Last year, Bad Books released their first new album in seven years, III, via Loma Vista Recordings to praise from The FADER, Pitchfork (“a serious body of work that can stand on its own, a testament to the friendship that brought them together in the first place”), Paste, Exclaim!,Brooklyn Vegan (“It's gorgeous on the surface, and there's a depth to the songwriting that keeps these songs lingering in your brain long after first listen”), and Garden & Gun, among others. The album ushered in a new “Simon & Garfunkel in space” style—sparse structures, simple harmonies, and gorgeous sonic embellishments—as well as a new era of the band featuring Hull, Devine, and officially McDowell. Listen to III HERE.
