Bec Lauder and The Noise have returned with an electric-charged new single and lyric video for “Nobody Cares.” The song comes from the band’s new LP, The Vessel, out everywhere music is sold on August 22nd via Killphonic.
You’ve called “Nobody Cares” a “chocolate-covered middle finger.” Can you walk us through the moment or mindset that sparked this song? Was there a specific event or feeling that set it off?
I think most people have experienced fighting for something they believe in and feeling pushback from either superiors, romantic partners, friends, or family. I wrote this song to help me through a difficult period in my life and for any other challenging situations I or you may encounter. To me, I’m not only screaming “Nobody Cares!”, but “Screw you, I’m trusting my gut on this one.” And, “Bug off! Don’t tell me what to do!” All of the things we want to say, but sometimes can’t.
There’s a real swagger to the track — part glam, part punk, part pop. How did you approach blending those textures in the studio to match the song’s rebellious but polished vibe?
The band writes most of the music in my Brooklyn basement, a super raw setup – we really play down there, and the songs are born in their most stripped-back forms. Then we get to go to the studio, rock the hell out, and decorate the songs like cake with all sorts of fun ear candy and beautiful sounds. That process is how our sound has been born and the through-line of our upcoming album, The Vessel.
Lyrically, “Nobody Cares” leans into indifference with confidence rather than defeat. What message are you hoping listeners take away from it — is it defiance, liberation, humor, or all of the above?
“Nobody Cares” is my anecdote, my relief song, a song you sing as loud as you can until you forget you’re even upset. It’s meant to be empowering, to encourage people to trust themselves and maybe give a little less of a fuck about things that aren’t serving them. It’s meant to be liberating and positive and light and silly, it’s a whole lot of feelings jam-packed into a song that will hopefully just make you feel a little lighter after a listen.
