I mean, it was a pretty complicated time. The record was pretty tumultuous when we got going. We were already talking and fielding offers behind the scenes from other labels, and there were conversations about us being upstreamed and bought out by major labels, so we were being pulled in a lot of different directions internally and still trying to focus on this record. I think some people may not know that it was a pretty bumpy ride to get to the endpoint.

Ryan Mendez, formerly of Yellowcard, has launched a new website for his mix engineer business.

During this time, I was able to further confirm how much I love mixing and I decided I wanted to pursue it exclusively when the band ended. My experience making music as an artist puts me in a unique and advantageous position as a mix engineer, as I know exactly how to approach a mix from the perspective of the artist. I pride myself in being communicative, cooperative, and eager to make sure the artist’s vision is being fully realized. I’m now mixing full time at my studio in Burbank, CA, and I’d love to discuss mixing your record, single, demo, or any other piece of music you might have.

Kanye West Tops the Charts

Kanye West has the number one album in the country:

Jesus Is King was released on Oct. 25 via G.O.O.D. Music/Def Jam Recordings and earned 264,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. in the week ending Oct. 31, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 109,000 were in album sales, while the rest was powered largely by streaming activity.

Patrick Stump talked with Chris Conley of Saves the Day about Through Being Cool and its impact:

Yeah, I think if we had met the right person at that time—like if we had met Luke Wood at that time, we would have signed with him. Let’s say we didn’t meet people that felt familiar, like they’re from our world of music, and they get it there. They support artists, and it’s not just about making a profit or whatever. But eventually, we did find them in Vagrant Records. They were the same kind of people that we knew from Equal Vision. They were just on the West Coast, and they had a slightly bigger operation at the time. And that felt comfortable. The Get Up Kids had signed to Vagrant.

It’s interesting to think back if we had signed to a major label based on Through Being Cool. I think they would have wanted us to keep making that same record to make it a brand. And I think for me as a songwriter, I just would have flinched at that. And I wouldn’t have made it through that. I just would have given it all up.

Apple Music Student Subscription Bundles Apple TV+ for Free

In a surprise announcement, Apple has announced its first bundle deal for Apple TV+. For subscribers to Apple Music on the student plan, $4.99 per month, Apple will giveaway Apple TV+ at no additional charge.

The news was announced on Hailee Steinfeld’s Instagram page, who stars in Dickinson. Apple TV+ launches this Friday.

I would say this. I try not to live and die by the comment section. The comment section is the most toxic part of the internet. It’s just people complaining. I was really surprised that people who say that they’ve been a fan of blink-182 for years, even with some surname with a 182, say on this one song: “oh you’ve ruined blink-182, this is not blink-182”. After 25 years and 9 albums worth of songs, you don’t like one song and you would turn your back on the whole band? That was surprising for me. But like I said, the comment section is always the worst part of the internet.

That’s good. Things happen so rapidly now. It’s like people go through a cycle of music like it’s a fucking Instagram page, where you just sit there and flick through pictures all the time. I think it’s a new frontier for [Green Day], which is really fun. We’re not gonna have a record deal, which is awesome. I’m able to put out whatever I feel like anytime. I did the Longshot record, and I got to put stuff out on SoundCloud. So it’s like it doesn’t matter if you’re in a punk-rock band or in a pop group or hip-hop. It doesn’t matter anymore.
