Matt Skiba comments, “I’m thrilled to be showing this round of my art with such beautiful friends and some amazing artists. Some of the new stuff is inspired by the scrawl on a childhood friend’s trapper-keeper as I remember it. He was super into death metal and was considered a ‘burner’ and ‘trouble’. They used those terms like they were a bad thing. I used lines from lyrics I’ve been writing recently combined with my friend’s graffiti. I want my new stuff to convey Hessian graffiti and ‘ignorant art’.”
Emily T. Nielson, founder of both Romantic Rock and Punk Rock & Paintbrushes explains, “Punk Rock & Paintbrushes came into my life as a surprise two years ago with the desire to share my friend’s art with the world. I feel very privileged to work with each of these amazing and talented artists. We must continue to create art to share our personal life and feelings with the world but through the strokes of a paintbrush…all the while being punk rock.”
To honor the late Greg Escalante, who was a co-founder of Juxtapoz Magazine, gallerist, champion of lowbrow art, and a shared inspiration and mentor for many of the participating artists, the Punk Rock & Paintbrushes Holiday Art Show is supporting Alexandria House, a non-profit safe shelter for women and children. To support, Mad Twins Art has created limited edition screen prints for the show, that will be available for purchase, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Alexandria House. Additionally, each artist will be contributing an art piece for an Alexandria House mural, with all proceeds supporting Alexandria House’s efforts.
Pam Hope, Director of Special Events and Corporate Giving for Alexandria House says, “From its very beginnings, Alexandria House has been an experiment in partnering with new eyes as we worked side-by-side with caring individuals and a variety of community groups. We are thrilled to work together with Punk Rock & Paintbrushes and their artists and musicians to bring the needs of women and children experiencing homelessness to the fore and also honoring the the life and legacy of Greg Escalante.”
The gallery, located at 1499 Artemus Street in Los Angeles, CA, will house this group art exhibition throughout the weekend and is open on Saturday, December 16 and Sunday, December 17 from 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.
