Swaecation is the debut solo album by Swae Lee, member of the rap-duo Rae Sremmurd. On Swaecation, Swae Lee keeps the features to a minimum and recruits Young Thug as the sole guest on the album. Swae Lee is a great creator when it comes to delivering hooks on songs. As a hook-Smith, he has found his way onto several big collaborations with other artists and his impact has been felt on top-charting songs like “Burn Slow,” “Unforgettable,” and “Don’t Judge Me.” Although, Swae Lee has never released a track alone, this album is filled with enthralling hooks.
With his high-pitched vocals, chorus and melodious verses, he creates an outer space party on “Touchscreen Navigation.” However, “Heartbreak In Encino Hills” comes with a great beat which Swae Lee is unable to utilize. It sounds like a long, uninteresting chorus with no elements of surprise or flexibility. “Heat Of The Moment” is a song worthy of radio play. ChopsquadDj’s use of the flute in the production adds a compelling ingredient to this track.
“Lost Angels,” and “Guatemala” are two outstanding tracks on this album and feature Swae Lee at his best. Reunited with Jxmmi on “Guatemala,” they create a song with sonic similarities to French Montana’s “Unforgettable” yet it is unique in its own sound. Swae Lee’s vocal quality is never an issue, but despite his dexterity, “Hurt To Look,” “Red Wine,” and “What’s In Your Heart” end up as songs with little or no replay value.
Swae presents great vocals and has brought many of the catchy hooks to the team. However, alone he struggles to create replayable songs. Most of the choruses range between average and good while many of the verses lack creative elements to fill in the spaces. If he featured more artists perhaps this would have been a better album because all the beats were great and blended with unique instruments to create outstanding sounds, but Swae Lee’s verses leave us scavenging for songs to have on repeat.
