Review: 311 – Full Bloom

The fourteenth studio album from Alternative Rock legends, 311, is a strong collection of songs that longtime fans of the band are sure to enjoy, and there’s plenty of new vibes brought forth for casual fans to check out as well. Full Bloom was produced by Collin Brittain, with some additional producer credits from Scotch Ralston and Tim Pagnotta. The band described Full Bloom as “311 on steroids,” and it’s hard to not agree with this assessment. 311 goes bigger and better than they have in quite some time and delivers the right mix of nostalgia paired with artistic growth for a strong musical statement. The set was preceded with their highest charting single in 13 years, breaking into the Top 15 on Alternative radio, with lead single “You’re Gonna Get It.” The concise ten-track album features some of the band’s strongest material in years showcasing that the veteran rockers have plenty left in the tank.

I had the opportunity to photograph the 311 and Dirty Heads concert in Columbia, MD. You’ll find the gallery as well as my thoughts on the tour below.

Steamy summer nights just aren’t complete without some reggae-infused tunes and 311 and Dirty Heads deliver just that on their co-headlining tour that came through Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD recently.

The show was supported by Bikini Trill, Dreamers, and The Interrupters (who felt like local favorites despite their LA roots). While the openers played from a wider collection of genres–indie surf to pop to ska–the main acts consistently delivered the Saturday night summer vibes.

Dirty Heads played an impressive set including fan favorites “My Sweet Summer,” “Lay Me Down, “Medusa,” and “That’s All I Need” before wrapping it up with “Vacation.”

311 continued to bring the reggae vibes as the sun went down. The quintet played a lot from their back catalog as well as a few newer tunes. The bounced from “All Mixed Up” to “Come Original” to “Applied Science” and finished with “Down.”

The 311/Dirty Heads Tour is what concert goers need, especially if they can’t get away for their own “Vacation.”

Review: 311 – Voyager

311 - Voyager

As a life-long 311 fan, I approached Voyager with more optimism than most. I looked forward to each of their releases every other summer and would typically be one of the first ones to purchase their new music on the street date. Over time, even as my taste in music gravitated towards punk/emo-tinged rock, 311 remained a band I would find myself coming back to as spring came to a close. With multiple summer tours packing amphitheaters across the US, 311 have always benefited from a patient listening base. This album should do little to change their devout fans’ opinions on the direction the band is going. The fact remains that at thirteen albums in their career, they may have played things a little too safe on Voyager.

The Offspring and 311 Cover Each Other’s Songs

The Offspring

The Offspring have shared a cover of 311’s “Down” and 311 have covered “Self-Esteem.” You can hear the new renditions on Spotify or Apple Music. 311’s Nick Hexum talked to Billboard about how the idea came together:

It was the Offspring’s idea, and a great idea. They said, ‘We had the idea to cover your song, and we’ve done it,’ and I was like, ‘Wow! I have to hear this,’ ’cause it’s such a signature song. Were they going to cover it faithfully or rework it?’ They reworked it just enough; There’s punk to it, and Dexter (Holland) actually does a killer job of rapping SA (Martinez)’s parts in more of a punk rock style, with fast drums. We were so blown away, It was so my fun to hear that. So we returned the favor and reggaefied (‘Self Esteem’), which is probably my favorite song of theirs. It’ll be a lot of fun to give the fans new versions of these songs they love so much.
