Kerrang went into the studio with Deftones to talk about their upcoming album. It’s apparently called Ohms and due on September 25th.
Kerrang! can corroborate this. While we’re not at liberty to reveal full details yet, the first single is a gargantuan addition to Deftones’ library. Chino, always a soft-spoken, laidback interviewee, can’t hide his excitement when he remembers the first time it came into his life – via email.
Deftones will be reissuing White Pony later this year with second disc, called Black Stallion, featuring new remixes. Consequence of Sound reports:
Deftones participated in a virtual press conference with several media outlets on Wednesday, discussing the 20th anniversary of their landmark album White Pony. One of the newsy bits to come out of the chat was that the band plans to release a deluxe edition of the 2000 album with a bonus alternate disc of brand-new remixes dubbed “Black Stallion”.
Deftones have revealed they’ve completed work on a new album:
“We actually tracked everything over the summer, last summer — June and July — we were in the studio tracking,” said Cunningham. “But we actually just completed everything. … We were down in L.A. recording, but we mixed up in Seattle.”
He added, “We’re working with our old pal Terry Date, who did a bunch of our earlier records and stuff, too. He’s up there [in Seattle] with this whole distancing thing; it was a bit rough, but we figured out a way to kind of do the mixes without being there.”

As Riot Fest wraps up this year, I have one question: when is it not festival season? I feel as if we’ve transitioned into an era where festivals and big bills are the new trend. I’ve attended and photographed four “festivals” this year alone and Riot Fest was one of the more enjoyable to shoot. The festival was easy and accessible — which isn’t always the case. Deftones’ Chino Moreno, Bad Brains’ guitarist Dr. Know, former Bad Brains’ drummer Mackie Jayson, Chuck Doom of Crosses, and keyboardist John Medeski have all gotten together to form: Saudade. The first single, by the same name, can be found below via BitTorrent.
The Lumineers have their first number one album on the Billboard 200. Deftones appear at number two with 71,000 copies sold (69,000 pure album sales).
Chris Stapleton’s Traveller dips 2-3 with 48,000 units (down 34 percent), while Kanye West’s The Life of Pablo descends 1-4 with 47,000 units (down 50 percent). The album fell 95 percent in traditional album sales, falling from a 28,000 start to a little more than 1,000 copies sold. (Much of its first week sales were bolstered by pre-orders not delivered until after the album saw a wide release on April 1. Those pre-orders were sold as part of a ticket/album bundle to his Yeezy 3 fashion show held at Madison Square Garden and screened via a live stream in movie theaters. The remaining sales were from Tidal and West’s official website.)
It’s been well-documented how tumultuous the nearly 30 year career of Sacramento rock band Deftones has been. From the tragic loss of original bassist Chi Cheng, to the in-fighting, to the passive approach the band took to recording their mid-2000’s records – it’s somewhat remarkable that Deftones didn’t break up years ago. Instead, the band has unleashed Gore, their most fascinating release since 2001’s breakthrough White Pony.
Deftones performed “Prayers/Triangles” and “Hearts/Wires” on Jimmy Kimmel last night. The videos can be found below.
