Radiohead Reportedly Film Video With Paul Thomas Anderson

Radiohead

Stefanie Wilder-Taylor reported in a podcast that Radiohead filmed an new music video with Paul Thomas Anderson:

Oh, this happened, I forgot to tell you. So, I’m at home and there’s a knock at the door… there’s a guy with a clipboard. I come to the door with a scowl on my face and the guy says, “Hey, we’re in the neighborhood, we’re going to be shooting a music video.” So now, I’m thinking you’re basically telling me — what happens a lot in my neighborhood, because it’s a very typical suburban-looking neighborhood — I’m gonna be inconvenienced. Then the guy goes, ‘It’s Radiohead,’” Wilder-Taylor continued. “I can’t tell you anything about it. I’m guessing that’s the non-disclosure part. Between us girls, Radiohead — I don’t give a shit, I don’t get it. I’ve heard one song I don’t care about — ‘Creep.’ Yeah, you’re a creep and a loser and you’re putting me to sleep.

Second Edition Commemorative AbsolutePunk Logo Pin

AP.net Logo Pin (Gold)

Last week we teamed up with Hard Rock’s Online Rock Shop to debut a special commemorative pin for the AP.net logo. We sold out of that limited run in just a few hours. After talking with our friends at Hard Rock, we’ve decided to do a second edition run of the pin. This version is bordered in a really cool antique gold color and is now available for pre-order. These won’t ship as fast as the last version as they haven’t gone into production yet, but we are aiming to have them sent out by the end of the month. I’ve been seeing a bunch of you post pictures of your pins on Instagram and Twitter and I can’t explain how cool it is to see that logo out “in the wild” like that. They really do look fantastic. I hope everyone that wasn’t able to grab the first run can get in on this pre-order, and I look forward to seeing even more photos in the near future.

If you missed last week’s post, I included a little history about how that logo even came to be. Now we just have to come up with something for Chorus so that in 20 years we can do another pin.

It’s a Tesla

Tesla

Ben Thompson, writing for Stratechery:

To that end, the significance of electric to Tesla that the radical rethinking of a car made possible by a new drivetrain gave Tesla the opportunity to make the best car: there was a clean slate. More than that, Tesla’s lack of car-making experience was actually an advantage: the company’s mission, internal incentives, and bottom line were all dependent on getting electric right.

Again the iPhone is a useful comparison: people contend that Microsoft lost mobile to Apple, but the reality is that smartphones required a radical rethinking of the general purpose computer: there was a clean slate. More than that, Microsoft was fundamentally handicapped by the fact Windows was so successful on PCs: the company could never align their mission, incentives, and bottom line like Apple could.

Helpful App: Thunderspace 5K

Apps

The last few weeks have been just a tad stressful. Needless to say my sleep schedule has taken a massive punch in the balls. Over the past few days I’ve been using this app, Thunderspace 5K, at night as almost a white noise machine. It’s been a revelation. It might be growing up in Oregon, and having spent many a night falling asleep to the sound of rain on the wood deck outside the window of my youth, but this app has replaced podcasts when I finally find my way to bed.

Kanye West’s ‘The Life of Pablo’ Hits Number One

Kanye West

Keith Caulfield, writing for Billboard, reports that Kanye Westʼs The Life of Pablo will debut at number one on the Billboard 200 charts.

The Life of Pablo is the first No. 1 on the Billboard 200 where the majority (70 percent, in fact) of its units were generated by streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Its 66,000 SEA units equates to just over 99 million U.S. streams for the album’s tracks in the week ending April 7. (Each SEA unit is equal to 1,500 streams from an album.)

A Bunch of Free Downloads Are Up on Amazon

amazon

Amazon has a whole lot of digital albums up for free download. Stuff like Augustana, Brand New, Say Anything, and Boys Like Girls. At first I thought this was some weird “sign up for our whatever program and then get the albums in our proprietary format” thing. Nope. I downloaded a zip file full of mp3s for that Augustana album as a test.1

Update: Not sure if this was an error on Amazon’s part or if there was a limit on the albums available, but the selection seems to have been cut immensely.

  1. Seriously, if you don’t have that album, get it.

One Week in the Books

Chorus.fm

I wanted to title this, “It’s been one week …,” but the moment I even think that sentence I’ve got Barenaked Ladies stuck in my head the rest of the day. You’re welcome for that. However, now that it’s the weekend, it means we have officially gone through our first week on the new website. I wanted to take a moment and thank everyone for the incredible response we’ve seen over the past seven or so days. I’ve been blown away by the outpouring of support, kind words, and all the amazing write-ups and tweets I’ve read remembering AbsolutePunk. I’ve compiled some of the articles from current and former staffers alike into a little round-up below, and put together some first week stats on the site as well.
