Here They Come Again

Louis CK

Anna Merlan, writing at Jezebel:

What gets lost in this particular equation is the part where someone makes amends. Nobody is required to lay out a road map for CK and Lauer and others like them to follow to gain forgiveness. Their spots onstage and on TV aren’t guaranteed, and if they remain professionally disgraced for a period of time that they—or their famous friends—find uncomfortable, that’s not the same thing as a “life sentence.”

But these comebacks are also predicated on the idea that redemption is directly equal to being allowed back in the public eye, being allowed to continue to reap money and power and influence in the field that gave you enough clout to feel comfortable harassing or assaulting women in the first place.

None of these men—that we know about—have talked publicly about undergoing counseling, made large donations to RAINN, done anything to understand the power dynamics they were part of. But there’s clearly an eagerness to let some of them back in anyway, after making the barest effort possible. The question is who benefits from that attitude, and who, once again, is harmed.

I thought this piece made a really compelling argument about the questions around what happens next for those accused of sexual misconduct.

Eve 6 Talk New Tour and Possibility of New Music

Eve 6

Eve 6 talked with Billboard about their 20th anniversary tour and the possibility of new music in the future:

Eve 6, meanwhile, hasn’t released a new album since 2012, and while Collins predicts the group will release more new music in the future he indicates a full album may not be on the agenda. “My creative energy now is going more into Fitness, but I do think it would be cool to do a single (with Eve 6) at some point, maybe next year,” he says. “We’ve talked about doing a deep cuts, punk covers EP or something that’s just kind of indulgent and fun for us, but maybe a few other people might find entertaining. I’m sure we’ll do something at some point.”

Tumblr Is Explicitly Banning Hate Speech

Shannon Liao, writing for The Verge:

Tumblr is changing its community guidelines to more explicitly ban hate speech, glorifying violence, and revenge porn. The new rules go into effect on September 10th.

“It’s on all of us to create a safe, constructive, and empowering environment,” Tumblr writes in its blog post. “Our community guidelines need to reflect the reality of the internet and social media today.”

Dan Campbell and Ace Enders Cover “Thunder Road”

Bad Timing Records

Thomas Nassiff, writing on his cool blog:

Katie and I got married in March. We had an awesome wedding and reception in Gowanus, and I’ll always think it’s cool that while living in Brooklyn we were able to host 120 family and friends for our wedding at a place that was just a 20-minute walk away from our apartment.

Congrats Thomas. But I thought this was SorryInterpunk.net.

Another detail that I’ll always remember is that our wedding favors were very dope. We asked three of our most musically inclined friends to record covers of songs we like, then we pressed those three songs onto a 12″ record. We will always treasure those three songs and the generosity of everyone who recorded them or aided in their recording, along with the helpful guys at A To Z Media, who have pressed nearly 50 Bad Timing Records releases in addition to this specific 12″. […]

We wanted to share Dan and Ace’s cover of “Thunder Road” a bit more widely, so that’s really what prompted me to write about all this. You can listen to the cover below via Bad Timing Records’ Bandcamp page. And if you head over to that Bandcamp page, you can grab a download of the cover for $1 (or pay-what-you-want if you’d like to throw in more). All payments from that cover on the BTR Bandcamp will be donated to the Human Rights Campaign, which is the largest LGBTQ civil rights organization in the country.

Thomas also details how you can get one of the physical records as well, if you’d like one, on his blog.

The Eagles Now Have the Best Selling Album of All Time

Rolling Stone:

The Eagles officially have the best-selling album of all time. Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975 has overtaken Michael Jackson‘s Thriller, reclaiming the top spot nearly a decade after the King of Pop’s death.

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) recently recalculated sales of the best-of collection and certified the LP as 38x platinum, pushing the 33x platinum Thriller to second place, the Associated Press reports. The RIAA confirmed the new certifications to Rolling Stone.

I Won’t Be Marginalized by Online Harassment

The New York Times

Kelly Marie Tran, writing at The New York Times:

It wasn’t their words, it’s that I started to believe them.

Their words seemed to confirm what growing up as a woman and a person of color already taught me: that I belonged in margins and spaces, valid only as a minor character in their lives and stories.

And those words awakened something deep inside me — a feeling I thought I had grown out of. The same feeling I had when at 9, I stopped speaking Vietnamese altogether because I was tired of hearing other kids mock me.

Joyce Manor Profiled at Stereogum

Joyce Manor

Joyce Manor are profiled in a new piece by Ian Cohen at Stereogum:

But while Million Dollars does largely readjust Joyce Manor’s coordinates from pop-punk to power-pop, it started out not as their usual odd-numbered reset, but almost as a nuclear option — Barry Johnson going solo. Much of the discourse surrounding Joyce Manor has pondered their ceiling for popularity: If this were the ’90s, would they be Jawbreaker, or would they be Green Day? A lot of the star quality is attributable to Johnson himself, with the makings of a reluctant Buzz Bin heartthrob.

Fast Supporter Pitch Before the End of August

Two weeks ago I made a quick pitch for why August was a great month to become a supporting member. As we get close to the end of the month, I just wanna give that one last boost as we move into fall.

I’ve run some of the math, and basically, if everyone reading this signed up for just one year, this website would be sustainable basically immediately for multiple years. If only a small fraction of the people reading this right now signed up, this website is viable for me to keep running as my full-time job for another year. And, that’s the ultimate goal.
