Last Good Day We Get The latest single from Queens, New York pop-punk band, Career Day, brings me right back to the care-free days of Warped Tour summer concerts, youthful exuberance, and when Drive-Thru Records releases owned the space in my car stereo. “Last Good Day We Get” finds Career Day honing in on the sound that they brought forth on their last EP (I’ll Always Be This), while adding some great new direction to their craft. Career Day is Desmond Zantua (vocals), Jacob Cutler (guitars), Kemal Pohan (drums), and Milo Brooking (bass), and they continue to showcase a pop-punk sound that strays somewhere between The Starting Line, Home Grown, and Allister, but with a modern twist and assist from producer/mixer Nicholas Starrantino (Summerbruise, Dear Marryane).
After a nice opening guitar riff from Jacob Cutler, Career Day get into a nice pop-punk groove with the opening verse of, “What a time to be in love / At the end of history / Hard to smell the roses / As the garden’s burning / If bliss is privilege / I feel so guilty / Like I’ve done a tapdance / On a life-raft / As the ship is sinking,” to help with painting a vivid picture of trying to find happiness when the world around us feels bleak. As the song accelerates to the finish line, Career Day do a great job of using the bridge to set up a great guitar solo and a musical breakdown from the four musicians. If they continue to carve out pop-punk gems like this song, Career Day might just live up to their name and make a solid career out of their music.
