Wesley

Today is a great day to share the latest single from singer-songwriter Wesley called “Not Sure That Was Me.” For those unfamiliar with the artist, he would fit in the same vein of fans of Kurt Vile and Arthur Russell. On the latest music video, Wesley shared, “I’ve always really liked those red glowing eyes in movies and things. Like in Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, and the Cure’s video for ‘Boys Don’t Cry.’ I cut red reflective tape and put it over my eyes. At one point I was standing on the top of a ladder in the dark with tape over my eyes. I wouldn’t want to do it again. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for Wesley’s new LP Glows in the Dark, out everywhere on November 11th via Earth Libraries.

In the late 1980s, I worked as a music librarian at KCRW while taking college classes at Santa Monica College. One of the perks of the job was taking home lots of great music. The music director let me keep a Bessie Smith box set, and I listened to those discs all the time. ‘Her Used-To-Been’ is paraphrased from a Bessie Smith song about how the protagonist goes back to her abusive ex-. In my version, I’m the protagonist and I’m telling Bessie to not go back.

Step right up if you’re ready to experience some music that makes you feel something magical in its delivery.

I wanted this song to feel like the tension before a kiss. Being in between who you were before and after it. Not love gained or lost but the middle child of the two. I had the most fun writing this one, the songs that pour out immediately usually are. There’s a lot of elements to this song that excite me, especially the ripping saxophones paired with the 80’s-esque drums. I love this song deeply and I hope you can hear that through its soaring vocals and production.

If you’re ready to take the next step in joining Parris Mitchell in his musical evolution, there’s no better time than now. I was also able to catch up with the artist for a brief interview.

New Junk City

Today is the perfect day to share Atlanta punk rock band, New Junk City, latest music video called “High Contrast.” In this great-sounding single, the band channel their love of Tom Petty with more of a Green Day styling to it. The band fits well in the scheme of fans of The Menzingers and Kali Masi. Band leader, John Vournakis, shared this about the new single, “It’s pretty on the nose – just about making an effort to remind myself of those moments when the clouds part, the light shines in, and I can see all the good, positive things in my life instead of staying focused on everything that is fucked up, rotten, and ugly. I’m certainly guilty of this, but I think a lot of songwriters use misery, dissatisfaction or self loathing as the defacto starting point. There’s nothing wrong with that, and I frequently feel that way, but it’s where I’ve always written from, and I just wanted to try to write a positive song for once.” By facing their hardest challenges head on, New Junk City have crafted a masterful new single.

Junro – “Stay Here Now” (Video Premiere)

Junro

I couldn’t be more excited to bring everyone the latest single from Junro, called “Stay Here Now.” The song builds off of the band’s successful debut EP, Throwing Stones, and speaks to their commitment in putting their best foot forward in their music. The band shared:

”Stay Here Now” is about hating where you are and trying to get out. I moved back to my home town a few years ago with my family and even though we came back on our terms and for our own reasons, it’s hard for me to feel successful living where I grew up. This song is one of the first we sent over to Andrew Groves, the singer and guitar player of Arcane Roots and our producer for ‘Matches’, and it really was the catalyst in our sonic change. We had a ton of fun trying to make the ending sound as massive as possible, layering so many guitars and different sounds. We think the track really defines the new vibe and we hope it hits listeners as hard as we worked on these tracks.

If you’re enjoying the single as much as I have been, please consider purchasing it starting this week. Junro’s new EP, Matches, also features this great single and will be released on November 4th.

”Orange Colossus” is about the way ignorance can grab a hold of an ugly thought and mutate it into resentment and hate. Angry fuzzed out verses describe the narrator’s unchecked frustrations, which are countered by melodic choruses urging the pursuit of understanding and empathy as ways to combat falling into cycles of negativity and instead promote an openness to learn and grow.
