Review: Phoebe Bridgers – Punisher

When asked about the pressure of writing the follow-up to her successful debut Stranger in the Alps, Phoebe Bridgers responded with an emphatic fuck no. “I made the whole record knowing that people were going to hear it. And I made the first record being like, “I wonder if I’m going to have to get a day job after this,” Bridgers explained in a recent UPROXX interview. “Mostly I just wanted it to be better than the first record, which I think it is.” With that clearheaded mindset, Bridgers’s new record Punisher accomplishes that and more – her lyricism has never been sharper while each track features richer and deeper song textures than ever before.

With Punisher, Bridgers’s worldview continues to expand even as the world around her (and us) falls apart. Love, death, and the impending apocalypse are consistently swirling around us, and Bridgers is fiercely captivated by every detail and how they exist within everyday banalities. Her interpretations and retelling of each one is wittier and sharper than ever. “Garden Song” begins with Bridgers daydreaming of living in her friend’s “house up on the hill,” but only after implying that the white supremacist neighbor has been murdered and buried in her new garden. There’s a contentment behind the wistful opener as she reveals that “the doctor put her hands over my liver/she told me my resentment’s getting smaller,” melancholically sighing, “No, I’m not afraid of hard work/I get everything I want/I have everything I wanted.”

Lil Baby Has the Number One Album

Lil Baby has once again topped the charts:

My Turn earned 70,000 equivalent album units (down 3 percent) in the U.S. in the week ending June 25, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data. The album (released via Quality Control/Motown/Capitol Records) has now strung together three consecutive frames at No. 1. It captured its first week at No. 1 when it bowed atop the chart dated March 14.

Bob Dylan came in at number two:

At No. 2 on the Billboard 200, Bob Dylan captures his highest charting album in more than a decade, as Rough and Rowdy Ways arrives with 53,000 equivalent album units earned. Of that sum, 51,000 are in album sales, 2,000 are in SEA units, and a negligible figure are in TEA units.

Bush had an ideology and the move to war was easy to protest. But comedians say it’s hard to satirise Trump because he’s the most ridiculous version of himself to start with and I find the same with writing. How do you approach someone just so diabolical and insane?

Our small team has always thought of itself as a DIY operation, which was difficult to reconcile while part of a corporate conglomerate. We’re grateful to finally be in charge of our own destiny. We set out with a solid plan to diversify Stereogum’s business, which currently derives all of its revenue from advertising at a time when 70% of all digital ad spending goes to Google, Facebook, and Amazon. We knew building a sustainable operation would not be easy. But since March, like so many other publications big and small, we have seen our advertising revenue plummet more than 50% because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Concerts and festivals, historically our biggest advertisers, have disappeared entirely.

God, I feel this. The ad market basically fell off a cliff in March and it’s been pretty terrifying. Stereogum have launched an Indiegogo to try and raise $250,000 to keep their website running.
