Misner & Smith – “Sadie’s Song” (Video Premiere)

Today I’m thrilled to bring everyone the latest video from Americana songwriting duo Misner & Smith called “Sadie’s Song.” Misner& Smith is the duo of Sam Misner (guitar) and Megan Smith, and they’re truly onto something great on songs like this. On this vibrant track that comes from their new LP, All Is Song, this duo capture the spirit of classic songwriters like Fleetwood Mac and Joni Mitchell in the best ways possible.

The band shared:

I (Sam) wanted to write a song about the kind of friendships we have when we’re really young, that may only last a relatively short time before life takes us in different directions, but that shape us in ways we never truly realize until we’re older. Those friendships that help us become who we are and discover what is most important to us in this life. I also wanted to write a song specifically about the friendship of two young girls in a world that is constantly telling them that they can’t do this or they can’t do that, simply because they’re girls. Sadie doesn’t play like that. She breaks the rules, she lights firecrackers and runs, and makes up constellations in the sky to tell her friend stories of adventures that are just waiting to be had. She does the things that are only supposed to be for boys. She’s free, and sees it as the only way to be. On the banks of Lake Ontario the pair make a pledge to “never let them win” as the stars and the Northern Lights are spread out above them. Most of the song is in the past, but in the bridge we’re in the present, the singer looking back through her memories in the cold, bright morning sun, wondering if these were dreams or real. This spills into the last verse where she realizes that, in fact, she’d kept her word and never let them win. And that Sadie’s been inside her head, whispering in her ear all this time: ‘Climbing over fences/when it suited us to feel a bit more free.’
