The latest single and video from U.S. Girls (the experimental pop project from Meghan Remy), called “Bookends,” signals a new and exciting direction for the project. Today, U.S. Girls announces her latest LP called Scratch It that will be released on June 20th via 4AD. I was able to catch up with Remy for a brief interview below. If you’re enjoying the video for “Bookends”, please consider pre-ordering Scratch It here.
Thanks for your time today! I’m excited to hear about your new record called Scratch It that will be out this June! What plans do you have leading up to the release of the LP?
Leading up to the release, I’ll be rehearsing and figuring out what songs from the back catalogue to include in the set, printing t-shirts, and doing interviews but mostly, just hanging with my kids and trying to be present to Now.
I understand the new record was recorded in Nashville, live and direct to analog tape. What was this process like, and who did you record it with?
The process was one of limitations but in turn, freedom. We worked outta the Bomb Shelter studio, recorded and mixed nine songs in ten days, which I think for Nashville standards is an eternity. I made the record with musicians Dillon Watson, Jack Lawrence, Domo Donoho, Tina Norwood, Jo Schornikow, and Charlie McCoy. We were supported by engineer genius Andrija Tokic and producer Maximilian Turnbull. Legendary crew, still pinching myself.
Your first single in support of the new record, “Bookends”, is scheduled to be released this May. What can fans expect about the direction you took on this track?
People should buckle up cos it’s a journey! 12 minutes long and every emotion is covered. And contains what may be my favorite organ solo of all time. God bless, Jo Schornikow and her magic hands.
