Record Store Day Roundup: 2023 Edition

Record Store Day is the annual celebration of indie record stores that is paired with special vinyl releases across all genres that get fans of the music format excited to join in the party in hopes of obtaining the release(s) they absolutely need for their collection. In this article, I’ll be outlining some of the special releases that brought music fans to the stores in droves, what I was noticing from the in-person and online feedback from attendees of the event, what was working well as well as a few recommendations for future years, and the aftermath of purchasing RSD leftovers online from various indie record stores.

Craft Recordings Announces Their Record Store Day ’23 Releases

This year’s Record Store Day features several new LPs from Craft Recordings. Among this year’s offerings is an exclusive picture disc that celebrates the 40th-anniversary of the Violent Femmes and their 1983 self-titled debut (limited to 6,000 copies), the first vinyl reissue of Jonathan Richman’s acclaimed 1990 LP, Jonathan Goes Country (limited to 5,000 copies on Red Cowboy Boot vinyl). Fans of Travis, meanwhile, will enjoy The Invisible Band (Live) (limited to 5000 copies; 2-LP; Clear Vinyl), which finds the Scottish band celebrating the 20th anniversary of their bestselling album with a hometown concert. Record Store Day occurs this spring on April 22nd, 2023.

In 2020, that world is different, so Record Store Day will be too. RSD is now scheduled to be celebrated with special, properly distanced release dates on Saturdays in August, September and October. The titles on the RSD 2020 Official List, launched on March 5th, will be released at participating record stores on one of these three RSD Drops: August 29th, September 26th, and October 24th. The new version of The List, with newly assigned RSD Drops dates will launch on June 1 so check back here for a look at when you’ll be able to pick up the titles on your RSD 2020 wishlist at your local record store.
