MuMu – “Wrapped Up” (Video Premiere)

Today is the perfect day to share the new performance video from indie singer/songwriter, MuMu, called “Wrapped Up.” The songwriter is from Harlem, New York and tackles the difficult theme of unexpected pregnancies, given the recent news breaking all around women nationwide. The artist shared:

When I was a little girl, I didn’t fully understand the term ‘pro-choice’ I thought that meant I would be ok with having an abortion if the time came. One of my older sisters delicately explained to me that pro-choice isn’t about personal choice, it’s about acknowledging that everyone has the right to choose for themselves. A simple shift in perspective made all the difference. As I got older, I realized that not everyone has a wise family member or friend to help them gain perspective. It’s difficult to determine what’s fair or just when we’re inundated with misinformation and skewed personal agendas.  But it’s not my place to tell you that you’re wrong. I just tell stories – real stories about living, breathing women who have been overlooked and under-heard.

I also got a chance to catch up with the band for an exclusive interview about this live performance video.

Clearly this is an essential release for you. Please tell our audience your inspiration behind the live video and how we should be impacted?

Ever since Roe v. Wade got shot down, I’ve been fluctuating between violently angry and sobbing sad. The day the news broke was the day I was opening for Pussy Riot at St. Pete Pride. My manager and I woke up in Florida, saw the headlines, and burst into tears. Despite the fact that pride events are supposed to be happy/party vibes, I last-minute added “Wrapped Up” to the set because if I have a microphone, I’m gonna use it. I have committed to playing this song at every show until further notice. In addition to that, I’m releasing this live session so the song can be available on any level to those who need to hear it.

Abortion is a complicated subject with arguments pointing in every direction. In all my research I’ve only found one thing to be undeniable; the need for abortion has always existed and it always will. It is part of our herstory globally and throughout time. What happened at the Supreme Court won’t stop abortions from happening, it will stop them from being safe. This live session is for the angry, the scared, the skeptical, the ambivalent. Please listen to these women’s stories, and try not to argue.

What do you want your fans to take away from “Wrapped Up”?

Each state still has the opportunity to do right by us. The fight isn’t over. Whether you call your elected officials, vote, write songs, show up at rallies, donate your dollars, speak openly, or listen to your neighbor when she shares her pain, it matters. And it matters now more than ever. If you’re feeling numb, you’re not alone. But complacency is contagious. So don’t be silent. Don’t lose hope. Don’t give up the fight.
