Today I’m excited to bring everyone a new single and video from The Lighthouse and the Whaler called “What’s In Your Head.” In this great-sounding single that fits somewhere in the same vein as The Lumineers and Mumford & Sons, this band crafts a crisp song about the complexities of relationships. I was also able to catch up with the band for a quick chat about this single.
Sonically, where did “What’s In Your Head” begin to take shape?
It really started with hours of work in the studio. Just trying things out. Over a few months of writing I started to try some new techniques and ideas and slowly that worked it’s way into shaping what this group of songs sounds like. Then the guys and I get together and work through the details and we mix it and round out the rest of the sound.
You described that the track is about “trying to understand the complexities of the person you love.” Did writing on this very topic help with processing this very experience in real life, and was writing it cathartic and needed, in a sense?
I don’t think it was a necessary thing. I think it was more a way of understanding the communication imbalances I’ve seen and experienced myself and how they lead down different paths.
With regard to the future of The Lighthouse and the Whaler, what’s in store for the near future? Is this single just the tip of the iceberg?
It’s definitely the tip of the iceberg. We’ve been working on a lot recently and there are more songs to come!
